Does WEBP really produce smaller files than BMP?+

For photographic content, yes — typically 25–50% smaller at equivalent visual quality. For content already optimized in BMP (icons, small graphics), gains may be modest. The tool preserves the original when the encoded result would be larger.

Is transparency preserved?+

Depends on the target format. WebP, PNG, AVIF, and TIFF preserve alpha losslessly. JPEG has no alpha channel — semi-transparent pixels get composited over a background color you choose. The tool warns before flattening.

Does anything leave my browser?+

No. Codecs run as WebAssembly directly in your tab. Open DevTools → Network while dropping files and you'll see zero requests fire. That's why HEIC, unreleased designs, and confidential client work all stay private.
