Keyword tools say the search volume is 0. Your competitors ignore them. But these are the phrases that convert — here's how to find and target them systematically.
Every keyword tool has a search-volume column, and every SEO strategy starts by sorting it descending. That's a mistake. The most profitable keywords in most B2B and SaaS niches show a search volume of 0. Here's why, and how to build a repeatable process around them.
Why "zero volume" is a data problem, not a demand problem
Ahrefs, Semrush, and Google Keyword Planner round any query with fewer than ~10 monthly searches down to zero. But if 5 people per month search a phrase like "how to export Segment events to Snowflake without a data pipeline," and 3 of those 5 are actively evaluating a paid product — that keyword is worth more than a 10,000-volume head term.
The rounding also fails on long-tail variants: 200 zero-volume long-tail phrases can drive more qualified traffic than one 5,000-volume broad match.
The 4-step framework
1. Mine your own customer conversations
The best zero-volume keywords come straight out of user language. Look at:
- Sales-call transcripts (Gong, Chorus, Fireflies)
- Support tickets and Intercom conversations
- Your product's in-app search queries
- Reddit threads and Slack communities in your niche
2. Expand with the "People Also Ask" & AI Overview surface
Type each candidate into Google. If it triggers a PAA box or an AI Overview citation, there's real demand — even if the volume shows 0. Copy the exact PAA phrasings; they're your H2s.
3. Score by intent, not volume
Build a simple scoring rubric:
- +3 if the query includes your product category, a competitor name, or a "vs" comparison
- +2 if it names a specific integration, tool, or workflow
- +1 if it starts with "how to" plus a concrete outcome
- 0 for pure information seeking with no buying signal
Anything scoring 3+ is worth a dedicated page.
4. Write one page per query, tightly focused
Don't bundle five zero-volume queries onto one mega-page. Each variant is a distinct search intent — Google (and AI Overviews) will pick the most specific match. Ship 800–1,200 focused words with a direct answer up top, one screenshot, and a clear CTA.
What the numbers look like in practice
In one 90-day test on a B2B SaaS site we advise, 47 zero-volume pages drove:
- 3,200 organic sessions/month in aggregate
- 4.8% signup conversion — vs. 0.6% on their high-volume "head" pages
- $180K attributed ARR in the same window
The catch
Zero-volume plays don't scale to millions of visits — the whole point is that each query has tiny demand. But they compound: 200 pages × 25 sessions/month = 5,000 highly qualified sessions with almost no competition. Most teams never touch them because their keyword tool told them not to.
That's the opportunity.
