Understanding SERP Features# Link to this article
SERP features are the non-organic blocks on a results page. Rankato records which appear for each tracked keyword, because they explain traffic changes that position alone cannot.
A ranking number tells you where you sit among organic results. SERP features tell you how much of the page is left for organic results at all.
Features Rankato records# Link to this section
- AI overview — a generated answer above the results. Frequently absorbs the click entirely.
- Featured snippet — an extracted answer from one page, shown above the rest.
- People also ask — an expanding question block, usually mid-page.
- Local pack — map results, for queries with local intent.
- Image and video packs — media blocks inline with organic results.
- Knowledge panel — entity information, usually on the right.
- Shopping and ads — paid placements above the organic set.
Why this is recorded# Link to this section
The most common support question in rank tracking is "my position is unchanged but traffic fell". The usual answer is visible in the feature record: an AI overview or a featured snippet appeared above you, so the same position now sits below more of the page.
Using it# Link to this section
- Filter tracked keywords by the features present to find terms where organic clicks are structurally limited.
- Where a featured snippet exists and you rank on page one, restructuring the relevant section as a direct answer is often the highest-value edit available.
- Where AI overviews dominate a term, treat AI-answer visibility as the goal rather than the organic position alone.
